William James is a late 19th century philosopher who, inter alia, was one of the first to study human emotion from a scientifc perspective. Crucially he placed the low-level physical bodily sensations (the psychological definition of emotion) as preceedng the higher-level interpretation of them (in psychology terms feeling).
